Description

A stunning broadcast-quality documentary…

Waverley is unique. She is the last sea-going paddle steamer anywhere in the world.

In this film we sail from Bournemouth and first encounter the Jurassic Coast off Handfast Point at Studland, with its distinctive chalk stacks of Old Harry Rocks. We call at Swanage Pier, itself a listed heritage structure, restored extensively in 2016-18 with support the from the Heritage Lottery Fund

Leaving Swanage, Waverley steams past Durlston Head, Anvil Point and Lighthouse, the Dancing Ledge, St Aldhelm’s Head, Warbarrow Bay, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door on her way to Weymouth. Here we join maritime historian, Richard Clammer, for a ‘walkabout’ of Weymouth harbour and discover the history of paddle steamer operations in the area.

No sailing on the Dorset coast by paddler would be complete without flashbacks to the days of the Cosens’ steamers: The film includes rare footage of PS Consul in 1962 and PS Embassy’s final day in service in 1966.

Written and presented by Chris Phillips, filmed and edited by award-winning director David Ellery, with original music by Jonathan Cohen.
